Grrrrrr. Sometimes the smallest problems cause the most frustrations. I purchased a new 4th generation iPod Nano. The USB cable of the Nano was defective. Plugging in the USB cable to my MacBook Pro resulted in the error msg “The USB device is drawing too much power. The port will be deactivated.” At first, I thought perhaps the Nano was defective. Imagine my surprise when the same error appeared when the Nano was not even connected to the other end of the cable. Ahhha a defective USB cable. Easy to fix, annoying to obtain because this requires another trip back to the Apple store to make the exchange. I am as big a fan of Apple as the next guy, but this would cause massive frustrations for the typical end user, not to mention a tainted opinion of Apple’s reliability and the “Just Works” mentality. The quality control for these new Nanos appears to be suffering. I know things break, but even the simplest of testing protocols would have caught this defective USB cable before leaving the factory. The holiday travel season probably caused me to have less patience with things, but come on Apple, this is a easy thing to catch and prevent. Back to my egg nog!
